Dear Mr Kushal, The rise in FFA of oils in frying is due to their deterioration under the harsh conditions involved and is unavoidable. Oils of better quality will perform better and so try other suppliers. You can reduce it by minimising the causes of it, such as temperature, moisture, access of oxygen etc... Dear Ms Yui, Density values of different liquids are difficult to compare because they are often measured at different temperatures. For example the density of PBDPS is usual stated at 60C while that of palm methyl ester is stated at 20C. Dear Mr Heng, Yes, what you are planning is perfectly possible except that RBDPO will be very thick and not very appealing looking even at your tropical temperatures. Try a small quantity first and see if it would be saleable. It may be better to pack it in small buckets. Palm olein and super olein would be a better choice for PET bottles. I have just bought 2 articles from "Science direct": "Resistance to Crystallization of Blends of Palm Olein with Soybean Oil Stored at Various Temperatures" researched by I. NorAini*, H. Hanirah and "Clarity and chemical composition of palm Olein-Safflower Oil Blends" published also by I. NorAini, H. Hanirah. However, these documents have not clearly show the relation beetween SAFA content of palm blending soybean oil with Clouding point, melting point or Solid fat content. Therefore, I will be really happy and lucky if you have any research articles, projects or documents which deeply relate to my issue. If you possess this kind of documents, could i buy its from you? Dear Mr Son, There is a great need for the kind of work you are planning and I am sorry I do not know of any publications on it. MPOB did publish some cloud point results on blends of palm olein with seed oils many years ago but they were very sketchy and nothing on PO. Dear Mr Kamarudin, I am not a toxicologist but my guess is yes. and I would not dream of using it without a certificate from FDA, and perhaps even then. I also think its production should be banned because of its alleged destruction of the ozone layer. And you have said nothing about its cost compared to hexane, the customary solvent. Dear Mr Omar, The MP only tells you that a sample of fat has near zero solids at a particular temperature, which is also much higher than that at which fats are normally used. It is also a very inaccurate test. The SFC test tell you how much solid there is at any number of preselected temperatures you want and it is also much more accurate. For example it can predict how spreadable a sample of margarine will be or how easily a shortening will be to mix, which the MP cannot tell you. The inaccuracy of the MP is causing most of the problems between buyers and their suppliers. Regards, FP (04.11.2009)

Dear Mr Son, Yes, there is a relationship between the SMP and the amount of SAFA present in a blend, especially if you know which oils are present. But the correlation is not strong enough to be very useful on straight oils.The reason is that there are many different SAFA each with a different melting point and they are not present free but as triglycerides of different configurations and different SMP. 621	Hi Frank. we intend running our vehicles on the dual tank SVO system this entails having a small tank that starts the engine on mineral diesel and when the engine is hot we switch over to palm oil. this then carries on running the engine. my question is will it be possible to use PALM OIL SLUDGE for fuel in this application.I dont think low temratures will be a factor in our conciderations. Dear Mr Grieve, I know that some companies use SVOs for their heavy goods vehicles, but none of the car engine manufacturers have approved even refined SVO never mind sludge oil which is the lowest possible quality. So, if you want to use it, it will be at your own risk. The problem with it is that it has no real trading specification, it usually has high moisture and impurities and always very high acidity. I think if you make sure it is dry and filtered, the engines will run OK, but its high acidity will lead to greater corrosion and reduce the useful life of the engines.. Regards, FP (25.10.2009)

Dear Mr Estevez, I am sorry to hear you have this disease (Phytophthora Palmivora, note correct spelling) in Colombia, a country making very good progress in PO. This year production. is forecast to reach 800,000t, up 30% from 5 years ago. You really need a plant desease specialist because my experience has been in Malaysia where this desease is not significant. But it does occur in India where it infects coconut palms and papaya. It is caused by a fungus and a preventative application of fungicide like mancozeb or basic copper sulphate has been found effective. You may like to contact the University of Florida where I know they are doing some research on it. But it is time Colombia started doing its own research on its own plant deseases. 619	I would like to know can HFC 134a extraction be applied to Palm Oilseed maximizing food value (i) High Quality Oil for food uses (ii) Protein Concentrates for special animal feeds 60>70% pure (iii) Protein Super Concentrates for human foods 70>85% pure (iv) Protein Isolates for human foods > 90% pure. Using Canola as an example, in a typical solvent-based extraction process, the biomass is first pre-pressed to expel approximately half of the oil contained in the oilseed. The remaining oil is then removed by 'washing' the seed with a solvent that removes 95 to 97% of the remaining oil. This solvent, typically a petrochemical, must then be recovered from the oil and remaining biomass, the 'meal'. These petrochemical based solvents boil at between 65°C and 70°C and as a result the meal is heated with steam to well over 100°C to recover the solvent which in turn exposes the proteins to temperatures well above the point where they start to degrade. In the HFC 134a extraction process, the biomass is pre-pressed and the remaining oil is removed using a patented refrigerant based solvent. The key difference is the HFC 134a solvents have a boiling temperature of approximately minus 20°C, which allows for a cost effective solvent recovery. The HFC 134a extraction process maintain the solvent at less than 50°C, a temperature below the point at which proteins begin to denature. These differences, although apparently simple, result in a system that produces higher quality and added value oil, meal and specialty proteins.	Rayudin Kamarudin
Dear Mr Kamarudin, Except possibly for soy meal, oilseed meals are used overwhelmingly for animal feeds for which price is paramount. Protein quality is primarily due to amino acid composition and not to processing temperature. 100C is not too high and is also beneficial in destroying pathogens. From the name HFC I suspect it is a fluorinaded hydrocarbon, highly toxic to animals and as such, not acceptable in law for contact with food in any developed country. These compounds also have the additional property of destroying the ozone layer which is protecting us from solar radiation and all of us dying of cancer. Dear Mr Asapure, I do not understand what you mean by "got circulation". Many things could be going wrong in your deodorisation and it is impossible to make a good diagnosis from a distance. Check that your steam and vacuum are as assumed in the design of the deodoriser and if the problem persists and the deodoriser was made by a reputable and experienced constructor, call them in for discussion.
