841	Hi, Is Palm Stearin O% transfat? Can it be used for frying donuts?	heidi_
Dear Ms Heidi, Yes, palm stearin has no trans fat. You can use it to fry donuts or anything you want, but it has a high melting point and some people may find it rather "greasy" in products which are eaten cold. But taste it your self with the minimum quantity and see what you think of it.. Peoples tastes differ and you are probably not running a 5-star restaurant. Regards FP (01.08.2010)

Dear Mr Olajide, The factor for converting weight to volume depends on the temperature because liquids expand with temperature. So at 50C, which MPOB has adopted as the standard temperature for PO, one tonne (1000Kg) PO will have a volume of 1120 litres. At room temperature the number of litres will be smaller. Be careful with these conversions because a US ton (note the difference in spelling), has 907 Kg. Barrels come in a bewildering number of sizes, but in the petroleum industry a barrel has 159 litres. I hope you now can appreciate the simplicity and logic of the metric system. For the current price of PO you must look in other places. Regards, FP (01.08.2010)

Dear Mr Fami, Your questions are about the day to day operation of PO mills and I expect different managers have different ideas But some important factors I would want to know would be weight of fruit bunches received, weight of CPO produced, oil/bunch ratio, kernel/bunch ratio, FFA, M&I, IV and possibly weight of sludge oil. Dear Ms Vomito, No one can tell you the price of PO in India except the traders who sell it there and even then, there will be apprecible differences between North and South India, inland or near the ports. The prices widely published in the EU are fob Malaysia/ Indonesia and cif Rotterdam. But when you consider that there are also Olein and Stearin, and each can be crude or RBD, that is a lot of prices to follow Regards, FP (29.07.2010)

Dear Mr Anowar, My answers to your questions: 1) Processing costs vary from country to country and to calculate it I would need a lot of information from you on the price of materials, labour services and capital in your country. 2) I cannot foresee the problems you will have in Bangladesh. Dear Mr Hai, Epoxy coated mild steel tanks are good if the coating is still in good condition. There is no way you can predict the colour rise or FFA rise of the oil in storage, from the standard specification figures normally supplied, but if you check the PV it will be a useful guide. Dear Mr Sumilong, The fertiliser should be spread in a circle under the whole canopy of the plant. You must keep the weeds down as they take up expensive fertiliser and harbour harmful insects. In ready mixed fertilisers the major nutrients are shown as N, P, K, (ie Nitrogen, Phosphorus, Potassium) with percentage figures after them. They are what you are paying for, so the higher those figures the better. For oil palms you need a high K percentage above all. I cannot advise you about the amounts you need because this needs a soil and leaf analysis first. Regards, FP (19.07.2010)

Whether Solvent Extraction plants in your country are extrcting oil from palm kernel cake, which is having oil content of about 8-10%, and which is in powder form. Dear Mr Vishwanath, The oil in PK cake is PKO not PO. I think it is quite possible to extract oil from the cake by solvent but I do not know any one in the West doing it. It seems a good idea. Regards, FP (15.07.2010)
828	Dear Mr. Frank, I am Rahmat from Indonesia, I just started running mini plant for Palm oil refinery, My problem is that I always have a problem with Bleaching process, using activated clay. bentonit/carbon I always fail to have a good color eg(yellow), Its always red.. A friend from china said that they have liquid to decolorising the CPO?, but reluctant to give the name of that liquid... Any idea what is tha liquid (chemist) are please?	Rahmat
Dear Mr Rahmat, CPO does not bleach sufficiently in the bleacher, it does so in the deodoriser and I can only advise you correctly if I know all the details. Bentonite is not very good for PO you will do better using a good branded earth recommended for PO. The liquids you hear about are oxidising agents which destroy the colour but oxidise the oil and I never advise any one to use them Regards, FP (15.07.2010)

Dear Mr Raj, I do not see degummed PO prices in UK as the world trade in it is too small, but if you take it as about half way between crude and RBD you should not be too far out. Dear Mr Quipanes, I am not sure I understand you correctly The person responsible for PO plantations in your country, will be the Minister of Agriculture. Telephone them or better send them a typed letter, explain who you are and what you want from them and make an appointment to see the highest possible officer there If he is any good, he will advise you how you should organise your tribe for the task and whether there is any government subsidy for such ventures/ .Also contact the office of the United Nations in the Philippines and ask for the same things The UN spend a lot of money and effort assisting people like you and they have some very helpful experts Bear in mind that with oil palms it will take at least 3 yrs work and expenditure before you get any fruit and then you will need a simple mill, storage tanks and probably transport to the market. I have been doing some work for a client regarding the use of an organic product that can assist in reducing/eliminating the Palm Oil tree of its attack by disease and nsects that affect its growth and yield. Can you tell me the average number of Palm Oil plants that are planted in a hectare. I know that the terrain is a factor, but I am only looking for an average number if it exist. 822	Dear Frank, I am working for a large Indian biscuit manufacturer and we consume sufficient quantities of RPO. In a bid to control the cost of RPO, we are trying to understand the entire value chain of this industry. Our suppliers mostly import CPO from Indonesia (marked to BMD prices). While we have a fair understanding of the production and refining processes, we have very little knowledge of how sea-freight is managed and the basis for pricing the same. Our sole interest is in understanding the factors that affect cost sea freight (per tonne of CPO) and how we can build a model to price this to ensure greater transparency. It would be utmost helpful if you could throw some light in this regard or even better, if we could have a brief call with you on this. Also, as we have negotiation meetings scheduled with our suppliers next week, we would be grateful to you if you could reply at the earliest possible. Looking forward to your reply. Thank you. Dear Mr Devanathan, Ship freight charges depend on the supply of ships and demand for cargo space, which in tern depends on the world economy and trade volumes. Forecasting freight costs cannot be any more accurate than other forecasts such as PO price or stockmarket indices. But I cannot understand your problem. Between 2008 and 2009 the average price of CPO, fob Indonesia fell by USD251, while freight costs to Rotterdam, which I follow, fell by USD15. I cannot believe that such a small variation over a whole year is a big problem to PO buyers. Regards, FP (19.07.2010)
821	Dear Mr. Frank, I am General Manager of a hong kong based trading company working in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh. At present we are planning to sell some bio-diesel plants / Solvent extraction plants /Refineries ( from european supplier) to bangladesh (it is our first initiative in this sector).Following are some information on this sector: 1) Bangladesh government not yet permitted bio-diesel production but within 2-3 years there is a probability of taking decision on this issue by the govt. 2) There are huge demand of feed items major raw materials of which is soybean and palm kernel speller. 3) soybean production is in very limited districts and bulk quantities imported from india and china. MY QUESTIONS ARE: 1) How and among what type of companies we have to run motivation campaign so that when govt will give permission for bio-diesel production, they will get advantages or be able to set up plant easily. 2) What is the probability of introducing solvent extraction plant among feed companies who are not doing any oil business. 3) On which sides whould we consider strongly so that europian supplier can supply plants competitively here with indian and malaysian plant suppliers. Dear Mr Syad, Sludge oil is the lowest grade by-product from PO mills. Its quantity in world trade is minute and there is no recognised specification for it. It is for buyers and sellers to agree on the values they want. Regards, FP (11.07.2010)
